People's Action for Clean Energy (PACE) has spent years gathering comprehensive data, ranging from energy costs and usage to the percentage of electric vehicles in every town across Connecticut. With this data in hand, PACE has developed a model that allows it to project the impact of implementing green energy projects decades into the future. Their issue: How do we best share this in a way that’s understandable and impactful for our target audience while still making it accessible to the public?

The Beezwax Solution
While the initial request focused on building an interactive Tableau experience, but we first took a step back to ask important questions. We considered who would use the tool, what decisions it should help with, and how it could inspire people to take action.
The Beezwax team worked with PACE through workshops and design sessions to turn a broad idea into a clear user journey. Together, we found the main audiences, set clear goals, and created a story that is both thorough and easy to understand. The end result was a clear and helpful experience that teaches users without overwhelming them and encourages them to take action.
Our work went beyond just data visualization. We created clear calls to action, planned the steps from insight to action, and added a useful energy planning tool to their website. We also adjusted to real-world challenges, changing needs, and even managed a full website move late in the project.

Turning Clean Energy Ambition into Actionable Data
Transitioning to a renewable energy grid sounds like an obvious choice. It saves money, is better for the environment, and can even reduce overall energy usage through modernization and efficiency gains. The difficulty is twofold. The first issue lies in devising a plan, setting a starting point, and most importantly, providing concrete numbers that drive cities and towns to buy into the effort. The second is in presenting the information in such a way that it’s intuitive to the average person who is unlikely to spend time reading spreadsheets and projections.
